The economy and music 11-07-08

So, many friends of mine do what I do for a living at every level of the spectrum from bands that tour in a car playing coffee shops to friends that fly on private jets to their arena shows every night.  The one thing that we all have in common however is that we are all feeling the effects of the economy.  When people are feeling the pinch entertainment is one of the first things to go from their spending habits.  Of course the majority of musicians that aren’t on major labels and don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars in tour support to back them up are hurting the most.  Usually smaller acts rely on merchandise as their means to get hotels that night, food in their bellies and gas to get to the next show.  Other’s margin of profit had much more leeway which is what everyone, of course, strives for.  So, I’m writing this blog in support of all of my fellow musicians and ask that when considering what to do with your extra $20 or $30 for fun on an anniversary or just a nice weekend night out please consider supporting your local music scene!  Also, please support the venues that bring you the live music that you love because once they’re gone they’re usually gone for good.

Tons of love,

Shannon C.

P.S.  Here is an article that I ran across recently.
